Experience the Civic District afresh this August 2023 onwards, with Benchmarks, a new public art trail commissioned by the Civic District Alliance (CDA). Designed by six Singapore-based artists, Lua Boon Kai, Joyce Beetuan Koh, Immanuel Koh, Yang Jie, Jeffrey Tan and Jason Wee, the public art initiative features a series of six unconventional artwork benches inspired by punctuation marks dotted around the arts and culture precinct. Each art bench draws from the rich heritage of the district, inviting visitors to have meaningful exchanges with themselves, other visitors, or even the surroundings while appreciating the beauty of the Civic District and its colourful stories. These art benches for Benchmarks are located at key areas of the Civic District, such as the Asian Civilisations Museum, The Arts House, The Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and along the Singapore River. The benches are open to public all-day.

Teo Eng Seng (b. 1938, Singapore) is an artist whose dynamic, seven-decade career is marked by a playful and evolving approach. Teo transforms everyday materials into vibrant works of art, embedding humour and irony into his socially engaged practice. His creations, full of spontaneous and vivid compositions, reflect his tongue-in-cheek takes on personal and broader social events. Teo’s practice undermines conventional ways of thinking about and making art while staying relevant to local and global issues. By asking “We’re Happy. Are You Happy?” the exhibition invites you to explore Teo’s honest and witty negotiation between self and society.

Kim Lim: The Space Between. A Retrospective repositions Singapore-born British artist Kim Lim as a pivotal figure in 20th-century sculpture and printmaking. As part of the first generation of diaspora and immigrant artists who moved to Britain after the Second World War seeking an art education, Lim has often been overlooked. This exhibition at the National Gallery Singapore is an attempt to demonstrate her unique contributions and highlight how she drew upon aesthetic values from material cultures across Asia and Europe to develop her own artistic language. Lim both referenced and resisted the burgeoning Euro-American discourse on Minimalism and abstraction, as well as the narrow cultural labels used to interpret her life and work. Featuring plates of more than 70 selected works, a curatorial introduction and three illustrated essays, this catalogue provides a fresh overview of Lim’s sculptural philosophy and offers new scholarly insights into her intellectual growth, artistic practice and creative relationships.

Co-founded by a powerful kindred force who has graciously supported us in our recent endeavours, they have been an enduring comrade since our fateful meeting in 2022. Bussy Temple has traversed through various parts of Asia, starting as a resistance movement reclaiming space for the FLINTA community. They have moved on to dismantle traditional assumptions about gender and sexual identities, fight against social inequality, and create harmony among all genders—always inclusive, never exclusive, and remain deeply committed to their community. It’s through collaborative work, performative artistry, and the true essence of dance music that these communities come together.
