Join artist Niki Sperou at Gallery 1855 in Tea Tree Gully for an immersive experience in the captivating world of traditional Greek shadow puppet theatre. This exclusive event, suitable for children aged 8 to 12, offers a unique opportunity for your kids to learn the art of shadow puppet making and performance.
Under the guidance of Niki, a skilled puppeteer, children will discover the ancient techniques of creating traditional Greek puppet characters, shadow theatre sets, and percussion instruments. Using recycled containers, they will craft their own puppets, bringing them to life behind an illuminated white screen. This shadow puppet theatre, also known as Theatro Skion, employs vibrant colors and intricate designs to produce a stunning stained glass effect on the screen.
Throughout the session, Niki will share the rich history and significance of Greek shadow theatre, a beloved art form that has its roots in Indonesia, China, India, North Africa, and Asia Minor. The performance involves the manipulation of puppets with rods, showcasing their dynamic movements, dances, and gestures. Musical elements and storytelling are integral parts of this enchanting experience.
No prior experience is required for this workshop, as all materials will be provided. Participants are only asked to bring a drink and snack. Please note that completion time may vary slightly.
