Guided Abre Tu Boca writing event with men and women doing what they always want, but sometimes can’t: Talking. Listening. Communicating. Exploring their most intimate space:the interior. But this is just a writing circle, guided by two writers. We write. We read the writing out loud. And we talk about writing. Keeping it all strictly on topic. But when you have a capture of your subconscious and it’s being mirrored back to you by “the other,” a few extra things inevitably happen. Something might stretch. Or catch. Or loosen. All sorts of things just might move inside you. Format of the Between the Lines 1. Write 2. Read 3. Listen 4. Feedback Men and women are divided into separate intimacy containers for the first part of the event. Abre Tu Boca founder, Amanda Aileen Fisher, guides the women in a writing circle, while Dillon Porter, of Teatro Pescadero, guides the men. Each group writes for 10 minutes (in English or Spanish*) from the same Abre Tu Boca writing prompt – the beginning of a sentence that drops you into your story. After writing, each group has some time to read aloud and share, as Amanda and Dillon facilitate. This is a warm-up for the main event: the mixing. For the second half, the women and men come together to share** and discuss their writing. This is the time to expose what emerged on the page – the snapshot of the interior – and to have it reflected back. Here, Amanda and Dillon guide deeper into the process of active listening and giving and receiving feedback. What does active listening really mean? They share tools and techniques from Abre Tu Boca that help deepen your awareness, including feedback prompts – jumping off points for where to direct your attention and how to respond, so you’re not stuck wondering what to say. All of this is done through the writing. For the writing. But it impacts so much more. As you keep coming to Abre Tu Boca, over time you become what’s commonly called a better writer. But you also become what could be called a better human – more deeply present with yourself and with others. You open. You relax. You deepen. You enter in and find a way to let others do the same. Imagine how that feels. *Writing, reading, and communicating can be done in either English or Spanish. In Abre Tu Boca, we exchange not only the writing, but also the language. **Sharing is always optional. Some pieces of writing (or days) are more vulnerable than others, and there are many ways to actively participate beyond reading aloud. An Abre Tu Boca style writing prompt is particular. An Abre Tu Boca prompt is the beginning of a sentence that drops you into your story. It knocks on the door of your subconscious and something inside you immediately gets up to answer. Pen to paper, you record what unfolds. Prompts can take you into styles of writing you have never before explored, uncovering characters and tales that lie deep within. And you do it all in a way that feels effortless. The prompt activates the writing and it flows out. You just catch it with the page. Prompts are effective for both experienced writers and for those who have never written. Abre Tu Boca always issues the invitational reminder to all humans: We all have words. Come use them. Between the Lines is guided by Amanda Aileen Fisher & Dillon Porter Amanda Aileen Fisher is a formally trained interdisciplinary social practice artist and writer who is drawn to the power of language in creating and reconstructing “realities.” Her work heavily explores perspective as a shape-shifter and how it can be used to access – and recode – the individual interior landscape, and thread by thread, the collective one. Her social practice and white box gallery projects have been shared and shown in Los Angeles, Mexico, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. Teatro Pescadero co-founder, writer, director and actor, Dillon Porter is known for his adaptations of literature and embodied performance of writers from the great literary canon.
