Holiday in Paris | K Museum of Contemporary Art
Jul 13, 2024–Mar 9, 2025 (UTC+9)
Seoul
Before the 19th century, most paintings were based on historical, political, mythological and religious themes due to the influence of social and religious environments. However, after entering the 19th century, with the advancement of the Industrial Revolution and urbanization, the growth of the middle class allowed people to have more financial resources and began to enjoy various leisure activities. Impressionist painters came into being and depicted the daily lives and leisure time of these people on canvas. Breaking away from the academic style that dominated the art world at the time, the Impressionist painters were no longer confined to the studio, but turned their attention to nature where they could fully experience light, color and air. They particularly like to vividly depict Parisians enjoying their daily romance and leisure through scenes such as picnics, boating, sunbathing, cafes, streets and gardens. The media exhibition "Holiday in Paris: Holiday in Paris" reinterprets the works of French Impressionist representative painters Auguste Renoir, Edouard Manet, Georges Seurat and Gustave Caillebotte through immersive digital media art, and through interactive elements, it makes the audience feel as if they have traveled back to 19th century Paris and become the protagonists enjoying leisure in Impressionist works. Philosopher Hegel once said: "Rest is the most precious thing in the world." It is a great pleasure for human beings to have peace of mind, temporarily get rid of physical and mental fatigue, and enjoy their own rest time. For those modern people who are tired of endless life and work, entering the exhibition hall, immersing themselves in the works of representative painters of Impressionism, and feeling the romance and leisure of Paris will be an impulse to get rid of physical and mental fatigue. We hope that the Paris scenery against the backdrop of the Seine River, the leisurely boating scenes and the sunbathing scenes on the grass reproduced through immersive media art can provide modern people with an excellent space to temporarily escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a rest.

MultiArt 2024 may be unfamiliar to us, but surprisingly, we focus on the interesting concept of "space elevator" that has been discussed for a long time in engineering.

Nari Ward:ongoin’ | Lehmann Maupin
Aug 28–Oct 19, 2024 (UTC+9)ENDED
Seoul
Lehmann Maupin is pleased to present “ongoin’,” a solo exhibition of new work by Nari Ward, in Seoul, from August 28 to October 19, 2024. This is Ward’s second exhibition in Seoul and features works on copper, sculpture, and wall installations that engage with aspects of healing and care that shape local communities, particularly in Harlem, the artist’s longtime residence in New York. Additionally, “ongoin’” explores the artist’s dedication to artistic interpretations of spiritual rituals and ceremonies, probing the fragmented images and invisible forces often associated with such practices.
Ward is known for his sculptural wall and installation works created from materials often found and collected in Harlem. The artist combines these materials and reinterprets their original meanings, creating collages that confront complex social and political realities (often around race, immigration, democracy, and community) through the juxtaposition of literal and metaphorical. Ward's work is materially explicit, yet intentionally ambiguous in meaning, encouraging viewers to explore a variety of possible interpretations.
Jason Boyd Kinsella: Ghost in the Machine | Seoul
Aug 30–Oct 19, 2024 (UTC+9)ENDED
Seoul
The core of Canadian artist Jason Boyd Kinsella's solo exhibition is to visualize the human heart and psychology. Based on subjective perspective and MBTI test, the artist breaks down the characteristics and personality of people into geometric units and defines each person's personality by changing shape, color and size, thus exploring the nature of human psychology.
Three-dimensional space is a key area of Kinsella's practice. Deeply influenced by sculpture, design and architecture, the geometric shapes in Kinsella's works interact with the surrounding space and provide multiple perspectives to observe the objects of creation, thus transcending the two-dimensional level of the medium. With the advent of the digital age, people can switch between multiple identities through constantly changing appearances. Kinsella locks his subject into the essence of people's psychological attributes to reveal their true selves.
Guillermo Lorca:The Shine in the Other Room | Tang Contemporary Art Seoul
Aug 31–Oct 12, 2024 (UTC+9)ENDED
Seoul
Guillermo Lorca’s The Light of Another Room explores the subconscious feelings that shape the human inner world. Through the interweaving of archetypal images and myths, Lorca’s work delves into the mysteries of the psyche. Each work is a window into the mysterious interaction between humans and nature, depicting animals, children and female characters - they appear as preconscious beings, full of unadorned intensity and primal power.
Inspired by the fact that each god, spirit or demon in ancient mythology represents a specific impulse, Lorca reconstructs these archetypes in a modern context. His characters become protagonists of new myths, revealing the secrets hidden in landscapes that are filled with danger and temptation. The works on display are both aesthetically beautiful and conceptually profound, providing a glimpse into Lorca’s inner journey and vivid chapters of his long dream.
Lorca’s creative process is intricate, starting with a small spark of inspiration (usually an image), which is archived, categorized and annotated. Through a meticulous and almost magical process, these references are transformed into possibilities that fuel his art. As a result, the act of painting itself becomes a ritualized experience that produces unique objects that are "worthy of being painted."
Intertwined with themes of violence, beauty, harmony, fragility, eroticism, tenderness, and magic, his work evokes a variety of emotions in the viewer. Lorca hopes that the viewer will experience a visceral sensation - a flutter in the stomach, a quickening of the heartbeat, a sense of strangeness and fascination. Viewing the paintings in person, one can appreciate the richness of detail and the shock of life-size figures, an immersive experience that is like witnessing an unexplainable story unfold.
From initial inspiration to final creation, Lorca's rigorous approach to painting highlights his dedication to craft and concept. This process involves not only the accumulation and combination of visual references, but also the actual construction of models and elements that guide his artistic conception. The combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology highlights the uniqueness of each work, and every brushstroke and color choice contributes to the overall narrative and emotional impact.
Each of the works in this exhibition embodies Lorca’s unwavering commitment to quality and artistic integrity. They are not only testimonies of his personal experiences, but also symbolic reflections of the most intense moments in his life, especially those during his childhood. The exhibition takes the viewer into a deeply personal and emotional space through an immersive approach combined with the intimate scale of Lorca’s characters.
The Light in Another Room aims to transcend the traditional boundaries of art, inviting the viewer to experience the realm where the subconscious and the conscious world collide. The exhibition title itself alludes to a hidden radiance that illuminates the unseen corners of the mind, where primal power coexists with tender emotions. This exhibition not only showcases Lorca’s virtuosity, but also his ability to capture universal human experiences, which makes each work resonate deeply on an emotional level.
This exhibition is a fascinating exploration of the world of Guillermo Lorca, where the boundaries between the subconscious and the real, the mythical and the contemporary, merge into a fascinating aesthetic experience. The Light of Another Room invites viewers to explore the mysterious and often disturbing beauty of the human mind - all revealed through the extraordinary artistic vision of Guillermo Lorca.
