Arts Painting
'Second Solace', nestled within the leafy verdure of Holland Park, the heart of West London, will offer up a visual narrative which works in tandem with its surroundings, a sanctuary for all art lovers. The works in 'Second Solace' evoke a deep nostalgia and a longing for freedom from the unintegrated self. The abstracted layers symbolise the superimposed mindscapes of a post-colonial identity. The pieces resonate with cultural hybridity, where colonial legacies and modern cross-cultural influences merge to create unique, layered narratives. 'Second Solace' is a visual exploration of the evolving self, a dialogue between past and present, heritage and modernity. I want 'Second Solace' to invite viewers to explore the synthesis of solace—a necessary process for accessing restful images that lie trapped within the imagination. Malaina Joseph-Sobers The layered compositions of Joseph-Sobers' pieces symbolise psychological boundaries and containment, inspired by Esther Bick’s second-skin theory, which posits that just as the skin holds the body together, psychological containment is essential for maintaining a coherent sense of self. Joseph-Sobers sees the symbolism of the multiple layers of skins as relevant to identity, a necessary process to reach a final, self-actualised state. Malaina Joseph-Sobers, born in Suriname and raised in Guyana, a former British Colony, spent her early years amidst the post-colonial tensions of the 1980s and 1990s. Moving to London at sixteen, she found herself navigating the complex layers of urban identity, while holding onto her Guyanese roots. Joseph-Sobers' undergraduate studies at Goldsmiths University of London marked a pivotal moment in her artistic journey, as she began exploring her heritage and identity, creating a self-portrait that juxtaposed her migration story with the historic ‘Windrush’ voyage from the Caribbean to Britain. This exploration unveiled the intrinsic link between her cultural, personal, and creative identities, allowing her to access previously suppressed cultural memories. The cultural layers of contemporary Britain, offers a nuanced perspective on identity, a tension that informs the constancy of my work. Malaina Joseph-Sobers This exhibition displays Joseph-Sobers' ability to translate profound psychological and cultural concepts into powerful visual art. It highlights her unique position within the contemporary art world, standing as a significant figure among Guyanese artists, she is known for her emotional depth and innovative use of texture and colour. We invite you to immerse yourself in the intricate postulations this exhibition presents viewers. Be ready to delve into the complexities of the human psyche through Malaina Joseph-Sobers' unique, contemporary vision. Make sure to mark your calendars in order to view 'Second Solace' this September. Opening times are from 10am - 7pm and the gallery will be closed on Saturdays. A private view will take place on 6th September from 5pm - 7pm. Information Source: eventbrite

Carl VINE| Strutt Sonata (2017) Elena KATS-CHERNIN| Blue Silence (2006/2012) Mikhail GLINKA| Trio pathétique (1832) Ludwig van BEETHOVEN| Septet in E flat Op. 20 (1800) David Griffiths, clarinet; Dimity Hall, violin; Julian Smiles, cello; with guest artists Andrea Lam, piano; Carla Blackwood, horn; Andrew Barnes, bassoon; Tahlia Petrosian, viola; and Andrew Meisel, double bass Beethoven presented his gracious and poised Septet alongside his First Symphony and First Piano Concerto in 1800 at his first public concert in Vienna, and joked that it was his Creation (despite it being nothing like Haydn’s monumental oratorio!) He would grow peeved that the Septet became one his most popular works, but it was an act of loving homage to the serenade tradition, often featuring woodwinds, that Mozart had cultivated years before. Love has fuelled many a musical work: Glinka’s passionate and unusually scored Trio pathétique was written in Italy and into it he poured the knowledge he had gained ‘of love from the pain it caused’. Elena Kats-Chernin composed her beautiful Blue Silence as a gift of meditative calm to ease her son’s suffering from schizophrenia. Jacqueline Strutt commissioned Carl Vine’s cello sonata as a gift to her husband John, a work of classical shape and proportions that celebrates the kind of music that this ever-generous couple enjoyed. Join NH sculptor Joseph Gray to walk Alnoba's forested trails and hear directly from the artist about the inspiration behind his work. Ask questions, share your thoughts, and get inspired! Gray has been working with stone for four decades and has more pieces in Alnoba’s extensive outdoors art collection than any other artist. His unique, spiritually-inspired sculptures can be found nestled across our campus. Your tour will include both Gray's work and his unique insights into other pieces by internationally renowned artists in the Alnoba collection. Gray creates his pieces using the ancient, hands-on technique of hammer and chisel. “There are thousands of chips of stone lying around my sculpture,” he says. “I have taken an eight ton block of granite and turned it into a small girl walking out of fire in a Holocaust tribute. To most people that would seem impossible. I do not think that way.” As part Abenaki, Gray believes his Native American background plays a key role in his art. “It connects me with the earth and nature… When I am carving an ancestor or spirit animal, I do not know what I am carving when I start. I can feel my ancestors guiding me. It is a spiritual experience for me and I lose myself in every sculpture.” Notes and Guidelines• Meet Gray in the parking lot before the tour start time. The tour will leave promptly, so arrive in plenty of time. Guests who arrive after the group has departed will not be able to join the tour. • Guests must stay with the guide at all times. • Please dress appropriately for exploring the outdoors. In summer, please wear casual clothes, hiking boots, and bring bug spray and sunscreen. • Joseph's tours run for roughly three hours. Be prepared to walk at an easy pace, with breaks, for that length of time. • Alnoba's buildings are closed. November 8, 2024 (Friday) at 7:00 PM at the Sofia Gallery. The Bulgarian Cultural Institute is pleased to invite you to the presentation of the film and book, Free, Freer, Dimitar, dedicated to the artist Dimitar Elenov. Guests: Sofia and Luiza Mihaylova, and director Rozita Elenova. Especially for the audience in London, Sofia and Luiza Mihaylova, students of Dimitar Elenov, will perform a dialogue based on the artist’s text. The documentary film * Free, Freer, Dimitar * is dedicated to the actor, director, and theater educator Dimitar Elenov, and presents an inspiring personality who has shaped generations of artists. The film is a mosaic of footage from the Bulgarian National Television’s film archive and personal stories shared by Elenov's colleagues, friends, and followers. This mosaic gradually builds up before us, revealing the image of a charismatic person known for his intensity, dedication, and talent. The work is a kind of puzzle in which, as the viewer pieces together the image of the artist, they themselves become creators, inspired and uplifted to fall in love with art and begin creating. The documentary captures the revelations of today’s Bulgarian stars—Vladimir Penev, Svetlana Yancheva, Dimitar Rachkov, Yasen Gyuzelev, Delyana Hadzhiyankova, Yoanna Temelkova, Stefania Koleva, Asen Blatechki, Violeta Markovska, and many others. The author of the film is Rozita Elenova, a Bulgarian actress, director, and Elenov’s companion for more than a quarter-century. Information Source: Bulgarian Cultural Institute London | eventbrite
