Set within a single location, River Story quietly observes the continuous changing of the seasons and the dichotomy of human presence in a natural environment, along a winding river. It contemplates our desire to reconnect with the natural spaces and life that surrounds us, after centuries of pursuing the ideology of a ‘dominion over nature’. Our movements are tentative and uncertain, yet slowly we embrace the unity we need to survive. River Story is an important body of visual work for our time. Having formed collaboration with the environmental charities: Friends of the Earth, Sussex Wildlife Trust, Pesticide Action Network and The Ouse and Adur Rivers Trust, Benjamin aims to inspire a deeper connection between people and the natural world by facilitating conversations around our relationship to nature, and the environmental challenges we face. This in-person event offers a unique opportunity to connect with the artist and environmental charities. Don't miss out on this exclusive chance to experience the magic of River Story. See you there! Lauren Joy Kennett, Sorry I’m Not Sorry, designed by Jane & Jeremy Following the solo exhibition of Sorry I’m Not Sorry, Lauren Joy Kennet (LJK) and Photoworks are proud to launch the artist’s first photobook. Sorry Iʼm Not Sorry explores LJK’s experience of living with undiagnosed autism. Through autobiographical and archive photography, Lauren Joy Kennett uses cutting and collaging techniques to explore self-discovery, and confrontation of life’s traumas and experiences that have shaped her existence. The work was commissioned as part of Explorers, a national creative programme to increase the visibility and representation of neurodivergent artists in contemporary visual arts, led by Project Art Works with Photoworks and cultural partners nationwide. Alongside LJK's inaugural publication, Jane and Jeremy are also launching their second book with Cole Flynn Quirke (CFQ). House of the Stray Dog is the latest visual odyssey shot in the two years following his autobiographical study of youth and nostalgia, Even a Maniac Can Learn to Drive. Stray Dog departs from the scrapbook-like schoolboy methodology of his earlier projects, instead oscillating around a series of intricately woven visual motifs whose gravitational pull intensifies with each turn of the page. The images presented constitute a heady cocktail of the natural and the human-formed, marking an egress from the street-pounding adolescent urbanity around which Maniac centred. CFQ strings together a series of photographic offerings that weave a visual narrative around the bittersweetness of self-realisation and the solitude of adulthood. The photobook launch is the first chance to view these exciting new publications and meet the artists and book designers. Information Source: Photoworks | eventbrite

Abstract: Those pursuing the academic study of dance likely share a common difficulty: finding sources that uniquely speak to one’s own research. While dance’s many histories, traditions, and practices fall under the “dance studies” umbrella, dance scholars often take interdisciplinary approaches to find relevant scholarship, setting them on a highly individualized and deeply personal path. As the field currently reckons with its canons, theories, and geographic preferences, it’s clear that no one definition of dance, and its study, is without shortcomings. This working group session invites dance-focused scholars to present an excerpt of academic work that is central to their research. We will discuss these sources brought in by participants alongside a reading of Thomas F. DeFrantz, together considering the limitations and possibilities of what dance studies is, and what it could be. Reading: Thomas F. DeFrantz, “Dance as a Humanity” (2023), p. 107 – 112. A link to the reading will be provided in your registration confirmation email. Information Source: eventbrite

William Shield’s Comic Opera of 1784 is a wonderful mixture of arias, duets and choruses interspersed with a humorous dialogue. Shield has provided us with a rather different take on the familiar Robin Hood tale, but you will recognise all the main characters. Composed in 1784, two years before Mozart’s Don Giovanni, you will be intrigued by vibrant and virtuosic arias, songs with a strong folk influence, colourful duets, engaging choruses, and a joyful finale with a really happy ending. Shield’s operas were designed to be an escape from the turmoil of his turbulent age, which was not very different from the world of the 21 st Century. You will certainly go home with some catchy melodies going round your head and a smile on your face! This is a completely new arrangement by the festival’s Artistic Director John Treherne MBE; and Austin Gunn has brought the script up to date. Admission £12 including a gala programme and refreshments. Information Source: Community Music Whickham and Swalwell | eventbrite

In times of grief and complexity, how can we duet with each other to form meaningful connections across worlds, shores and borders? Inspired by a 4-year collaborative writing project between Clare and Laura, from East Sussex to the Isle of Eigg in Scotland, this workshop will explore how to forge embodied connections through letter writing: working in tandem with the environment, the weather, and with each other. Whilst so many doorsteps around the world are under threat, this workshop acknowledges the privilege of having a place of safety on which to stand, and will be one of the last events at the ONCA Gallery before it closes. The event will finish with the launch of a notebook, Duetting: Weather Writing from Two Doorsteps, which includes an invitation to find your own duet partner or partners, and to write together, continuing the project through the ever-changing weather patterns of our times. We hope this work helps to shape connections, with each other, with our thresholds, and with the complex worlds that hold us, in joy and in grief. This event is open to anyone, no writing experience necessary. Feel free to come on your own, with a companion, or with many companions. Please bring cash or card as there will be books for sale. And now the end is near, and so we face the final curtain Regrets, we ve had a few, but then again, too few to mention Yes, there were times, of course you knew, when we bit off more than we could chew But through it all, when there was doubt, we faced it all and did it our way. Come to O N C A to say goodbye to the gallery that supported and held huge visions and magic over the past twelve years and nurtured countless projects, artists and relationships. Bring your memories, stories and feelings. Bring your friends. Bring something to drink, to share, to offer. Please join us to bid farewell to this precious project that emerged, lived and evolved, against the odds, through the care, energy and determination of the community who loved it. We will begin at 5.30pm sharp with a eulogy, paying respects. Then expect: 6.30pm open mic (five minute slots for tributes to O N C A / to grieving / to disillusionment and rage / to collective endings. Do you want to learn how to write poetry? We’re running an eight-week beginners poetry course on Tuesday evenings in Kemptown Bookshop, Brighton starting on 7 January 2025. Over the course of the eight weeks, you will experiment with language and a variety of poetic devices alongside your fellow emerging poets. By the end of the course, you will have a greater understanding of poetry; be able to draft and edit poems including experimental poetic forms; create original imagery; and edit your own work. The course is run by Roy Mcfarlane who has published numerous collections alongside being the former Birmingham Poet Laureate, Canal Laureate and Birmingham & Midlands Institute Poet in Residence. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was awarded a Doctor of Letters by the University of Wolverhampton. There will be opportunities for poets to present work, ideas and practical exercises and to suggest topics for discussion, should they so wish. Between meetings, you will be able to share work and raise questions around writing technique with other writers in the group through the interactive webpage for the course. Join Roy in the cosy surroundings of Kemptown Bookshop to explore your inner poet. The course dates are 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th January 2025; 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th February. The workshiops start at 6.30pm and end at 9pm. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate is available to buy on the night from the Bookroom Cafe. The eight-week course costs £299 including VAT.
