A screening of 16mm films by artist filmmaker Karel Doing followed by a conversation between Karel and artist Chloe Brenan. Karel Doing is an independent artist, filmmaker, and researcher whose practice investigates the relationship between culture and nature by means of analogue and organic process, experiment, and co-creation. His work has been shown worldwide at festivals, in cinemas, on stage, and in galleries. He was a founder member of Studio één, a pioneering DiY film laboratory. He has invented “phytography,” a technique that combines plants and photochemical emulsion. In his new book Ruins and Resilience: the Longevity of Experimental Film (Goldsmiths Press, 2024) he explores the “ruins” of cinema and the innovative ways by which the experimental artists, since the end of the 20th century, are trying to keep it alive. Chloe Brenanis a visual artist working across the languages of motion film, photography and printed matter and ephemera. Her work is attentive to the poetic haptics of daily life and involves close attention to subjects and processes on the edge of perception that call into question boundaries between bodies, environments and wider structures of power. She teaches in the Department of Sculpture and Expanded Practice at NCAD. Films by Karel Doing The Mulch Spider's Dream 16mm, 14 minutes, colour, 2018 This film attempts to kindle the vision of a spider by using experimental phytochemistry; creating organic shapes, rhythms and colours directly on expired 16mm film. Poetry Workshop Writing is fun right (write!)? We do it because it bring us, among other things, joy to make and create, to play with language. In this workshop we'll be diving into the fun of poeming, getting silly with language, maybe playing a game, maybe trying some team writing, and having a go at a couple exercises to mix things up and get us thinking and writing outside of the box. There'll be a few things to try, so if you don't fancy the sound of one thing there'll always be an option to do something else. I'll provide some poems and other resources, and guide us through some exercises and games, but if you've got anything else you think helps make writing fun please bring it along to share! This will be a relaxed workshop, but the aim is for you to create at least three pieces of draft writing you can take away with you to continue working on. It doesn't matter if you've been writing since you could first hold a pen, or never written at all, this is a safe and inclusive space to come hang out and enjoy being creative together. Queer community friendly x As a working class human I've come up against pay barriers all my life; this workshop has three payment tiers cos I don't want money to be a barrier to anyone. If you can afford the higher tier please know it's much appreciated, but the lower tiers are there for those who need them. If this still presents a barrier please drop me an email :) Information Source: Rachael Hill | eventbrite

Participants meet in the Front Square at NCAD. You should bring a small selection of plant material for the workshop. Phytography is a technique invented by Karel Doing that makes it possible to create detailed chemical traces of plants directly on photographic emulsion. The process takes place in full daylight and makes use of biodegradable chemistry. During the workshop the artist will explain his technique, placing it in a historical lineage of experimental photography and film while also connecting it to ecological awareness. After this introduction, a hands-on demonstration is provided. Participants can create their own images and see the results in projection. The workshop will begin with a visit to NCAD FIELD, a 0.4 hectare site adjacent to the campus which was ‘guerilla composted’ in the last decade and now is a wild and biodiverse haven in the inner city. NCAD FIELD operates ‘rhizomatically’ serving staff and students across all College departments with established courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, while also interfacing with expanded communities of place and interest in Dublin city and beyond. Birthday Show & Album Fundraiser: Come celebrate with us at the Elgin Theatre Guild for an unforgettable night of fun music! This show has 2 main objectives: 1) It's my birthday on November 16th and I would love nothing more than to share some beautiful music with some beautiful people...like you! Join us. Feel the love, feel the joy, feel the inspiration. 2) In March of this year, I reached my goal of writing 100 songs. The idea was to write 100, pick the best of the best and make an album with my selections. Well, I am officially in the studio and my producers and I are hard at work crafting what I believe is my best album yet. What they don't tell you is that albums are expensive to make. Be part of the story, the journey, the myth, of why it came to fruition. At this show, I will be featuring, live, a large selection of tunes off of the record, which means that 120 of you will get to hear the songs before anyone else. I am also bringing along my 4 piece band for this show, which means you will feel the full impact of said songs. You'll get a taste of a couple top secret special guests as well. During the breaks, take part in the 50/50 draw, the silent auction, and buy some merch, all of which go to the cause (making the album). I'd love for you to be there! It's going to be a night to remember, so mark your calendars and invite your friends for a fantastic evening of entertainment. See you there! Information Source: Elgin Theatre Guild | eventbrite
