WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: LANDSCAPE IMPRESSIONS WORKSHOP - Jim Lamb It will be my purpose during this workshop to cover the steps I use in producing a landscape painting. I will demonstrate as requested by the students and spend as much time individually with each participant as possible. It will not be the goal of the class to end up with wonderfully finished paintings. My desire is to help you work through finding solutions to problems in the painting process as they arise …and we all have them. My general definition about painting is basically fixing the things in the painting that aren’t working yet. We will begin with a discussion of materials and equipment, followed by a layout of the palette. I will address subject selection, the importance of composition and design, simplification in the massing of values and shapes and edges, as well as the mixing of harmonious colors and the use of textural application of paint. Students are encouraged to ask all questions, even the “dumb” ones. Some of you have taken other workshops. Much of what I teach will be a reiteration of what you have already heard or learned, and some will be a departure. My hope is that all of you will leave having received some helpful new information and encouragement. Enjoy the process, be open to new ideas, and put miles and miles on your brushes after you leave here. It is a long road we travel, and regardless of what your wishes and hopes are for quick solutions, be willing to accept the fact that it is a journey and not a destination. THE INSTRUCTOR: Born in Hamilton, Montana, Lamb studied at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and has 15 years of experience as a professional freelance illustrator. His work has been commissioned by the Smithsonian Institution, the National Football League, the White House, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the U.S. Postal Service, as well as numerous leading motion picture studios, and national corporations. Jim is a member of the historic California Art Club, a signature member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters of America, Pleinair Washington Artists, and a signature member of the Pacific Rim Institute of Marine Artists. His varied artistic subjects have been exhibited and collected widely in the U.S. and are part of the permanent collections of the National Football League, the US Postal Service Stamp Museum in Washington DC and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin. Jim is the only living artist whose paintings are a part of the permanent fine art collection at the Governor’s Mansion in Olympia, Washington. “I love the landscape and I’m inspired by the way the various qualities of light play upon it. A large percentage of my paintings are created “en plein air,”on location. Painting outdoors is invigorating, inspiring, and challenges my creative decision-making process. These smaller on-location paintings are “studies,” which I often use as reference for my larger studio work. God’s creative work is awesome. I’m just trying to capture a tiny piece of it using oil paint on canvas.” SUPPLIES/EQUIPMENT: A detailed supply list will be provided after registering. You must bring your own plein air equipment and supplies. In case of rain, please be prepared to bring a personal cover/umbrella as not all locations have covers. LUNCH : Lunch is included in the workshop cost. Every day, one hour will be given to attendees to allow time for lunch. Bottled water will be available from the workshop coordinator. SUGGESTED LODGING: Various lodging options are available in the Seattle area. Lodging is at your own choice and cost. REFUND POLICY: There are no refunds if you cannot attend. For circumstances PAWA cannot control, PAWA reserves the right to cancel the workshop, in this case, a full refund will be issued. The workshop will happen rain or shine.
