WTSC Winter Volleyball Tournament! | Smith Fieldhouse
Jan 18, 2025 (UTC-6)
West
Looking to play some volleyball, but can't gather enough people to play? Want to play a sport with fun people, but don't want to commit to playing a whole season? Looking to get active without the competitiveness that often comes with joining leagues? Enjoy playing in a co-ed environment? We've got you covered! West Town Social Club's Indoor Volleyball Tournament is a tournament created specifically with individual players in mind--no need to pay for a whole team and beg your hesitant friends to join! All players in this tournament are registered as individuals, and will be assigned to one of four (4) teams based on self-ratings--we do our best to make sure all teams are evenly talented. Whether you are a beginner or an expert volleyballer, this event is all about allowing everyone to play in a non-competitive, fun environment. Why? Because at West Town Social Club, we're all about having a good time! This event will be co-ed, so that everyone has a chance to play. RULES/FORMAT Most standard recreational volleyball rules will apply. West Town Social Club's ruleset can be found here. Team assignments and the tournament schedule will be sent in detail via email prior to the event. All matchups will be best of three. The losers of the first round will play for 3rd place in the second round, while the first round winners will play for 1st place. AFTER PARTY We have a great after party lined up after the tournament at our sponsor bar, Barcocina! The bar is a short drive or >15 minute bus ride (via the #66 Chicago Ave bus) from Smith Park. Barcocina is hooking us up with $25 Corona buckets, $25 Corona Seltzer buckets, and $10 margaritas. TEAMMATE REQUESTS/FULL TEAM SIGNUPS Anyone who registers a friend (or significant other) alongside them will get placed on a team together! Requests for additional teammates will be considered on a case-by-case basis up until one week prior to the tournament, and are not guaranteed to be honored. Please remember that this is meant to be a fun tournament where the emphasis is on being social/meeting new people rather than being competitive! Additionally, with this being a social event, full team signups are not available. While we hope to make this an absolutely fun and memorable tournament, there are a handful of important, not-so-fun things to note. Please see below: AGE REQUIREMENT: All participants must be at least 21 years old to participate. Proof of age may be requested by the organizer on the day of the event; please bring identification in case. Those who register and cannot show proof of age will be denied participation in the tournament and will NOT be refunded. ALCOHOL: The Chicago Park District strictly prohibits ANY alcohol consumption in city parks/fieldhouses. If you are caught consuming alcohol during participation during this event, you will be asked to properly dispose of your beverage. Any further alcohol consumption witnessed during the event will result in being asked to leave and could potentially result in being banned from future West Town Social Club events. Please do not ruin the chances of us having another tournament by consuming alcohol in the gymnasium/on park property; there are plenty of great establishments nearby to pregame (that being said, please don't show up heavily intoxicated--you may be asked to sit out until you sober up or to go home if there's serious concern for your well-being) and we have a great establishment lined up for an after party! REFUND POLICY: No refunds will be issued except in the event of a non-weather related cancellation. Credit towards future events may be issued on a case-by-case basis up to 14 days prior to the tournament WAIVER: All participants will be asked to sign a digital waiver prior to arrival, agreeing that West Town Social Club will not be held liable for any injuries and/or illness associated with participating in the volleyball tournament. Failure to sign this waiver will result in participation being denied with no refund being issued. Registration closes 24 hours prior to the event. Reserve your spot today! Child’s Play: An Investigation of Violence, Desires, and Taboos Through Art | C24 Gallery
Jan 15, 2025 (UTC-5)
West
A panel discussion exploring the methods and materiality of addressing challenging topics through artistic expression. With the works of Berlin-based crochet artist Patricia Waller as a focal point, the conversation will address the use of unconventional methods to provide unique points of entry into difficult terrain, as well as the role of art in stimulating discussion about controversial issues. The artist will be present, along with a panel of speakers representing the art world and the international humanitarian sector (to be announced). This event will be hosted at C24 Gallery, located at 560 West 24th Street, New York, New York, 10011. About the Exhibition: Child’s Play is the first solo exhibition by Berlin-based artist Patricia Waller at C24 Gallery. The show displays the myriad ways that Waller explores how violence is woven into the fabric of modern culture, particularly as it impacts children and animals. Her crocheted figures combine elements of cartoon-like innocence with sinister undertones and graphic depictions of both accidental and purposeful injury. The juxtaposition of these contrasting elements conjures both humor and horror, awakening the senses of viewers to profound effect. Waller's ambiguous works raise uncomfortable questions about how we deal with the various forms of violence in our society: the violence to which we are exposed, which we perpetrate ourselves and which we consume with relish. In so doing, she encourages us to reconsider how we deal with our fears and our ability to address or repress them. Banner photo: Adrian Fernandez Milanes/Courtsey of C24 Gallery BiographiesBerlin-based artist Patricia Waller is well known for her colorful crocheted works that deliver serious messages about violence and abuse via a medium that is more commonly associated with comfort. Chilean-born Waller has made a decades-long career of responding to the growing acceptance of violence in the world as well as satirizing and playing with cultural mythologies and norms. Patricia Waller has been widely exhibited throughout Germany and also in China, Spain, Austria, the Netherlands, and more recently at C24 Gallery in last year’s group exhibition, Conflicted. She is represented in Europe by Galerie Deschler, Berlin. Sharon Louden wears many interchangeable hats including artist, educator, advocate for artists, consultant, community builder, editor of the Living and Sustaining a Creative Life series of books, and Executive Director of Women’s Studio Workshop. Sharon graduated with a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Yale University School of Art. Her work has been exhibited in numerous venues including the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, the Drawing Center, Carnegie Mellon University, Weisman Art Museum, National Gallery of Art, Birmingham Museum of Art, and others. Sharon is currently a faculty member in the MFA Fine Arts program at the School of Visual Arts in New York. In addition to teaching, she continues to conduct grassroots Glowtown workshops in schools and not-for-profit organizations across the country and she is the Founder and Director of the Institute for Sustained Creativity. Her new upcoming book, Last Artist Standing: Living and Sustaining a Creative Lifeover 50, will be published in early 2025.

Artist Talk: BioCycles | Arts Factory
Jan 15, 2025 (UTC-5)
West
Please join us Wednesday, January 15 from 6-8pm for conversation with three amazing local artists - Courtney Rohan, Jasiatic Usher, and Quincy Woodard. They will be discussing their Residency Showcase, entitled Biocycles. It is an immersive art experience inspired by what was, what is, and what can be in the Freedom-Wilkinson Corridor. Where three is often seen as a crowd, it became evident for us early in our residency, that three was completion and lent itself to nature’s cycles. Past, Present, Future. Recycle, Reduce, Reuse. Transcendence, Life, Birth… During their 10 weeks in residency, the Culture Bearers explored recycling and life cycles, finding new insights that reflect the intertwined processes of nature and human experience. Work in this exhibition examines how the environment and people around us mirror our journeys through past, present, and future.
